My '94 Safari got Car Quest conventional 5w30. It didn't care, I'm pretty sure I could pour straight water into that thing for lubrication and it would run.

if it was possible to figure out who is the actual manufacturer of the oil, then maybe. but who knows? they could switch suppliers all the time.

I’m sure you could hit up “Project Farm” on YouTube and he’d be willing to test it.

That stuff is too pricey. Point me to the jug with the white label with black writing that just says ‘OIL’.

Amsoil makes special oil for classic cars, but I have no idea where to find the damn stuff. No way I'm mail ordering oil every year.

It’s probably fine. I am bit curious as to who buys this instead of spending a few bucks more for a name brand:

YES....... i look for the conventional versions of the oils that i am supposed to run. the conventionals have slightl y larger oil molecules, which prevent it from weeping oil out of the tired old seals. and the life of the oils is in line with MY usual schedule for wanting to change oil, say between 3000- 5000 miles........

Meh. So long as it has oil in it. And said oil and filter get changed on a semi-regular basis. Probably shorter change  intervals if you're using recycled deep-fryer oil.

Usually 10w30 Pennzoil conventional. The 10w cold rating is a band-aid for DE oil consumption and it has a pour point of -42 degrees celsius which is crazy for a 10w30.

It’s made by the same company that makes Supertech for Walmart.

Normal People: “Eh, gimme some 10 W30. Whatever’s cheap.”

Me: “T his one gets 2.25 quarts 10W40, 1.25 quarts 10W30, 1 quart 10W40 synthetic, these two friction modifiers, Lucas oil stabilizer, Liquid Moly Cera, and Red Line 81403.”

I use this or whatever is cheap for the equinox. It leaks it out anyway and won’t die after 215,000 miles.

Edit: Knock on wood.

Just changed the GX oil today, I go with synthetics and change every 5000.  maybe too often, maybe too nice of oil...I don’t care, its worth the piece of mind.

I used to put that stuff in the Integra and my other old Honda’s. Because the standards to meet API whatever, have risen so much since then, the cheapest stuff you can buy today is more than good enough for 90s cars.

I will probably do the same with the Hyundai, although I still have a 5qt jug of synthetic that I never I got to use on the Volvo, fortunately they take the same oil weight.

Twelve bucks a quart. And classic old guys would tell you to save your money. SAE 30 for the old cars, says I. Or SAE 40.

Same. If the car is newer, I use Mobil 1. Otherwise, conventional.

Every 5,000 miles on the clock. And rotate the tires and inspect the brakes.

As long as you drain every 5,000 miles and use an API-rated oil, should be fine.

Yes; oil has gotten so good, I expect that Amsoil has much less edge on anything else than they would have in the 80s.

Drain is relative..... only about 2 quarts come out after filling with 5.

But it try to stick around 3-5,000. It hasn’t been knocking like the metro did when it was thirsty.

Hey: will you do me a favor? There’s a show on Netflix called Valley Uprising , about rock climbing in Yosemite. Will you watch that show, or some of it, and describe the video techniques you are seeing to me in the jargon of one who knows? It’s a bunch of sort of Ken Burns mash-up of animated stills, colorized b&w, and so on. I just don’t know how to refer to any of it. (And it’s a really fun show, too.)

Thanks.

I used to use Valvoline out in BC, but the  -30 degrees C pour point on their 10w30 is a dealbreaker in Ontario winter. Even MaxLife 10w30 only pours down to -33 degrees C.

Heated seats and dual-zone automatic climate control are a godsend up here. I guess converted to Fahrenheit our temperature extremes last year were -26 Fahrenheit with the windchill  in the winter and 113 Fahrenheit with the humidex in the summer. It’s wacky.

Dude: that’s weather. A few times each winter, we might see a nighttime low that dips below 40 degrees F.
